WEB OF LIFE |
"Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons and daughters of the earth. We did not weave the web of life. We are merely a strand in it. What we do with the web, we do to ourselves." - Chief Seattle |
Annually for many years I have taught a 5 week course called the Web Of Life for the Mass Audubon Organization. Because of Covid-19 , I was not able to do that in 2020. Thus, I began this blog. It is my way of getting the information on the Web of Life to those that might be interested.
So what is the Web of Life? Imagine a pyramid. On the bottom level are the micro- organisms that live in and on the surface of the soil. The next level up are all green plants. On top of the plants are all insects. All other living species, including humans, fill in the rest of the pyramid. The key to understanding the pyramid is that the bottom layer has the greatest volume of species. The second has more than the third and so forth. The basic message of the pyramid is to show how the suns energy is transformed into food and sustains all life forms on this planet. This explains why all animals, insects, plants and micro-organisms depend on a complex system for food and survival and why all creatures are interdependent within their ecosystem. This information is not only useful for gardeners but to anyone stirred by the mysteries of life! |
